I was looking around Pinterest the other day for hair inspiration. I came across an image of Ingrid Michaelson, I had never heard of her, and really wanted to draw that image. So I did. By the way, she is a singer/song writer.

I needed a piece that would re-spark my creativity after a long absence from inhibition, when it came to my personal work. The topic of voodoo came up in a drawing forum and I decided that it would be my jumping point, my leap of faith back into un-inhibited creativity. I did a tight sketch right away… I kindof knew what I wanted from the moment I started.

I looked at the tight color comp I had done and was happy with it but felt that it was lacking a magical moment. I erased out the faces in the smoke, thinking it would look hokey the whole time. I was extremely happy with the result which only re-invigorated my interest in the piece.

Here are some details of the work:

Overall I am extremely happy with the outcome of the piece. I feel like, for the moment, I have remembered how to let myself go even if it’s just a little.

The title of the piece is ‘Mambo des Erzulie Freda’ which basically means ‘Female Voodoo practitioner of the Voodoo Saint of Love’.

I really liked the model this week. She did some great dynamic poses and wasn’t boring in the face during the hour-long poses.

The Brittany illustration was done for a coworker that was leaving us to pursue opportunities in California, where she was from. The illustration was done to reflect her personality and a sense of Cali.

The rough sketch was done, knowing that I wanted the poster to fit into a typical size frame of 18×24. Concept wise I wanted to show the Frost Tower, here in Austin, somewhere in the illustration but finally decided that it was completely unnecessary since the final illustration was to have signatures of everyone from the company.

Next I drew different versions of Brittany, hoping to capture her personality through reference photos taken by Eddie Vasquez.

Finally I had a color scheme and was able to complete the feeling of the illustration/ California theme.

So… this is my first attempt at Digital painting in well over a year…

I think I did it a bit better than I did last time.
